Injuries to the foot and ankle often lead to broken or fractured bones. The most common causes of foot and/or ankle fractures include falls, missteps, car accidents, impacts from a heavy weight, and overuse.
Depending on the severity of the injury, different fracture types may occur. Fractures can be stress fractures, hairline fractures, closed or simple fractures, open or compound fractures, crush injuries, or spiral fractures.
At Gotham Footcare, we are proud to offer our patients digital x-ray examination with most advanced, state-of-the-art equipment.
This advantageous technology allows us to magnify the image so that we can properly ensure the most accurate diagnosis and treatment for stress fractures in NYC.
At Gotham Footcare in NYC stress fracture treatment depends on the exact location and severity of the fracture.
Reduction
Oftentimes, fractured bones need to be realigned and manipulated back into their proper positions, which is done through a process called closed reduction. Depending on the amount of pain and swelling surrounding the affected area, a muscle relaxant, or a sedative may be provided to minimize any pain or discomfort during this procedure.
Immobilization
A broken bone must be immobilized to ensure proper healing. A variety of external devices may be used to hold the bone in proper alignment while healing. Such devices may include taping, strapping, splinting, bracing, or casting devices, surgical shoes, or pneumatic compression walking boots. Crutches may also be provided for added offloading assistance.
Surgery
When fractures are not manually reducible, a severely broken ankle or broken foot may require surgery to implant wires, plates, rods, or screws into the broken bone to maintain proper position during healing. When surgery is necessary, you can rest assured that you are in the hands of a competent and highly trained surgeon. Dr. Miguel Cunha is a board-qualified NYC foot surgeon experienced at performing foot and ankle surgery with diligence and personal follow-up care for every patient.
